No, I have not performed any optimization, I was unaware of that.
I've been looking in PCA, I haven't seen an option, I don't know if there is a native option in phpbb or I should do it in phpmyadmin, for example.
(Sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I don't know that procedure.)
One way to optimise the database is to export a database backup from the ACP (all tables) and then import that database backup creating the tables and populating them.

Another way is to look at your database with phpMyAdmin (table view)
Usually the column at the right shows the overhead.
Select all tables with overhead, and at the bottom (below all the tables);
At the bottom there's a check all which can be used to select all tables, and to the right of that, you can choose which action to perform on he selection (one of those being: Optimise table(s)
