There are many different instructions that can be found via https://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=bot+attack.I have followed the instructions provided in other discussions to implement a blocking code for users who are overloading our server.
The short answer is using
robots.txt for well behaved bots that honour it and .htaccess or other firewall methods for bots that do not honour robots.txt. On my boards I have had success using
