Extract the contents of the archive to your computer and open the phpBB3 directory
Delete the following files from the package:
The config.php file
The files/ directory
The images/ directory
The store/ directory
On your website, delete all files from your board EXCEPT for:
The config.php file
The ext/ directory
The files/ directory
The images/ directory
The store/ directory
The styles/ directory
Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from your computer to your forum's directory. You may be prompted to overwrite the remaining files. If prompted to merge or overwrite directories, choose to merge them.

Update the database:
Using your web browser, visit /install/app.php/update in your board's root
Select "Update database only" and click Submit
Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% and for a message indicating that the update has completed

Please describe your problem. I had the ACP up on a tab while doing the update. Once I completed the update, I noticed that I could not get to the General tab but could go to any other tab in the ACP. On the general tab I received a error 500.
I thought this might be due to using SoftBlue style, so I uploaded the updated file for SoftBlue since I could not deactivate it since it is the board's default.
I also, deactivated all extensions.
I logged out to see if I could login to the board. I could log into the board, post in the forums, but now I cannot any part of the ACP. Sometimes I get 500 error and sometimes 401.
I updated the server to php7.2, so that I could do the update, and was able to update the sql db.
The logs sometimes reference a path to php71, so I ma not sure if that is the issue, nor how to fix it. It is also odd that it is pointing to that directory as the board is on: http://www.sharp-players.net/phpBB3/
I plan to update the sql and php to a more recent version, after I resolve the boards issue.
