I started with an account on a community platform (about 25 years ago) that offered a free preconfigured personal forum (it was a threaded forum). I thought: Cool, this threading is quite nice. After some time I noticed the disadvantages of threaded views and asked whether they would consider an option to switch to flat view (also other small things, that eventually resulted in an offer to become part of the "innovation" team" which I accepted.I personally chose phpBB because it was the first forum software i interacted with; a website I used to frequent ran phpBB. I've tried others but didn't quite like them.
But during the 2 years during which I proposed several changes and new features, some of which were accepted and others rejected ( sometimes rightly so) nothing happened and I resigned (eliminated my board first)
An acquaintance of mine suggested I have a look at phpBB (version 2.0.2 or 2.0.3 IIRC) which I did and I liked what I saw so started a forum on a free host and after some time wanted to modifying small things. Anyway, to cut a long story short (I should do that more often), learned to use a PWS and started following the development of phpBB and I liked what was happening (also in these forums).
I did look at a couple of other packages (can't remember names) but there was nothing even remotely as open to new ideas as phpBB so I didn't have to look any further.
